Obituary

In Loving Memory of Elias Maria Reti (1956–2026). The international art world mourns the loss of the visionary German-Hungarian artist, Elias Maria Reti, who passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, in Caesarea, Israel, at the age of 69. A monumental figure of contemporary creative expression, Reti leaves behind a profound and sprawling legacy that deeply moved friends, partners, and admirers across the globe. He walked through life like a magnificent dream, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of modern art.Born in Budapest on April 4, 1956, Elias Maria Reti’s life was shaped early on by both profound tragedy and historical upheaval. Emerging from a Jewish-Hungarian family, he was the great-grandson of the celebrated chess grandmaster Richard Réti. His family suffered devastating losses during the Holocaust; his paternal grandparents were murdered in Auschwitz, while his father, Benjamin, narrowly survived by hiding with a farming family in Pécs. When Elias was just six months old, the Hungarian Revolution broke out. His father fought bravely as a freedom fighter against Soviet forces, but tragically, both of Elias's parents lost their lives while attempting to flee the country after the rebellion collapsed. Left an orphan, Elias was brought to Munich in 1957, where he spent his early years growing up in an orphanage.Art became his ultimate calling and salvation. In 1971, at the exceptionally young age of fifteen, Reti encountered the legendary avant-garde artist Joseph Beuys. Recognized for his immense raw talent, he studied under Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, officially becoming Beuys's youngest pupil. When his mentor was abruptly dismissed from the academy in 1972, a fiercely political and passionate young Reti moved to East Germany in open protest against the West German system. After a few years working in agriculture near Dresden and a brief stay in London, his journey took him across the Atlantic. Married to the Polish actress Danuta Kolarska, Reti immersed himself in the roaring New York art scene of the late 1970s. There, he ran in the same creative circles as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, absorbing and contributing to the peak of the Pop Art movement.Upon returning to Germany in 1980, Reti settled initially in Cologne and later back in East Berlin, establishing himself as a prominent pioneer of the "Junge Wilde" (Wild Youth) movement. He became celebrated for his bold, expressive paintings and photography, eventually developing his own philosophical art movements known as Originalism and Astroismus. Throughout his turbulent yet brilliant career, his art served as a bridge between deep ancestral trauma, vibrant pop culture, and boundary-pushing avant-garde experimentation. Elias Maria Reti will be remembered forever not only as a master of the canvas, but as one of the last true giants of a golden era in art history. He is deeply missed, wept for, and celebrated by all who had the privilege to witness his genius.
