Obituary

In Loving Memory of Josephine Dorothea Dickens Johnson October 14, 1932 – June 21, 2024

On June 21, 2024, Josephine Dorothea Dickens Johnson ascended peacefully in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, wrapped in the love of the family she spent a lifetime building.

Josephine arrived into the world on October 14, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, the cherished second child of Lester Dickens and Stella Jackson. Across more than nine decades, her warmth, resilience, and unwavering spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. A devoted mother and a lifelong learner, Josephine inspired her family by pursuing her college degree after raising her family. Her passion for helping others translated into an 18-year career as a Case Manager, where her innate kindness transformed countless lives.

After retiring to Minnesota in 1992, Josephine turned her tireless energy toward her community. As President of the Resident Council, a delegate for the MHRC Board of Directors, and a key member of the Modernization and Maintenance Committee, she remained a respected, proactive leader well into her golden years. Her leadership and advocacy were so impactful that she worked closely with local leadership, including the Mayor, to improve the lives of community residents.

Above all, Josephine was a beacon of strength for her family. She was the beloved mother of Estella, David, Joseph, Phillip, and Voncia, and the proud grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of 15. Though she was the last surviving member of her generation—having been preceded in death by her parents and siblings—her spirit lives on through the generations she nurtured.
